"Impressions and Expressions of Emotion in Color"

The Fine Art of Lowell Hayenga

Lowell Hayenga (Dee-R-Teest) is an American fine artist whose many works consist of still life's, landscapes and portraits. Primarily self-taught, his style, technique and look are unmistakably his own and carry with it a visual signature rarely confused with other contemporary artists of the era.

Heavily influenced early in life by the impressionists and post-impressionists of the 19th century as well as tonalism later on. It was tonalism that steered his work to the next level. The personal style that has emerged, carries an exceptional and innate knowledge of bold color combined with light, shadow and contrast that create powerful visions of beauty, mood, emotional enticement and intensity in his work.

DeArtizt is also an accomplished bass player and an exceptional musician and composer. His music reflects the same as his paintings, Beauty, Mood and Emotion.

Studied music theory and ear training in 1980 at the University of New Mexico. After moving to Phoenix, Arizona in 1981, he attended Al Collins Graphic Design School earning an AA in Graphic design. While working as a warehouse manager throughout the 1980's and early 90's he continued studies in fine art, art history, two dimensional design, color and color theory at MCC in Mesa Arizona.

In the 1990's his creative interests spread to the film industry and enrolled at Scottsdale Community College where his studies centered around cinematography, directing and film editing. He excelled as a film student and earned several awards of achievement and recognition including his short film "Sorry Charlie" that won 1st place at the 13th Annual SCC Film festival in 1992.

Into the next century, he got a job working as a color corrector and proof printer at a professional photo lab. With cinematography already under his belt, he learns about the negative image. His work and experience in manipulating the negative image vastly enlarged his already impressive understanding of complementarys, split-complementarys, color theory, and light and shadow. His fine artwork began to blossom.

In 2013 he made the decision to be a professional fine artist for the remainder of his days. and channeled all of his creative energy into doing so. He worked out of Warehouse 1005 Art Studio/Gallery in Phoenix Arizona from 2013-16 and quickly gained recognition and notoriety becoming the gallery's highest paid artist in their nine year history.

The COVID19 pandemic, coupled with a debilitating spine issues and severe depression kept him from physically working and creating during most of the next six years. The few works that were created are considered some of his best. He devoted himself to study, observing and learning despite the lack of production. The result was the liberation of his impression and the dawn of new techniques involved an even more striking, and intimate use of color.

After spine surgery and recovery in early 2024. A year later he would move to Grand Junction, Colorado where he now resides, and works out of his small home/studio there.

"I love the Grand Valley and I love Colorado. People seem so happy here and that's contagious. Some say it's "God's Country." I would have to agree and I intend on painting it. A lot of it. I love the art community here in Grand Junction and I'd like to get to know and help inspire as many the local, artists I can. I'm about to enter the most productive and lucrative part of my art and music.

I can feel it in my soul."
